Historical Background
The story of Da Lat began on August 3, 1891, when Dr. Alexandre Yersin embarked on his first expedition to find a mountain route from Nha Trang to Saigon. Although the trip was unsuccessful, in 1893, he explored and discovered the Lang Biang Plateau. In his diary, he recorded the wonders of this land, describing it as a “great barren plateau.”
As the demand for a cool retreat grew, Yersin suggested Lang Biang, leading to the establishment of the first sanatorium there. From 1900 to 1910, the French constructed transportation routes from Saigon and Phan Thiet, promoting the development of Da Lat. By early 1916, Da Lat was just a small township but quickly became an attractive destination.
