Located on Mount Obertraun, the Hallstatt Ice Cave is a great place to visit the Alps. A relaxing ride on the Dachstein Mountain gondola will give you a breathtaking view of the valley and lake below.

There are only a few places on Earth where tourists have easy access to giant ice caves, and Hallstatt is one of the best. The neighboring Mount Krippenstein of the Alps offers the perfect conditions for the formation of caves. Half-day Hallstatt ice cave tour is one of the interesting activities when visitors to Austria.

The ice cave, discovered in 1910, is impressive not only for its huge frozen waterfalls but also for the size of some of the ice caves. Even in the summer, you'll want a coat on the 1-hour cave tour. Your local guide will give you information about the history of the cave, key features and many interesting details about how the ice naturally forms.

In addition to tours, the entrance to the cave is also home to great views of the surrounding peaks.

To get to the ice cave visitors can take bus 543 from Hallstatt for 15 minutes to the Dachstein Visitor Center; ride on the cable car gondola to station 1 and walk the very well beaten trail for 20 minutes to the entrance. The ice cave is closed for winter from November to May, but the alpine ski area still offers outdoor sports services.
