Profile
Officially completed on October 2, 1966 at a cost of $7.4 million, Jones Hall is named after Jesse Holman Jones - the former US Secretary of Commerce and is likened to a memorial in his memory. . Before his death in 1956, Jones expressed his desire to see Houston have a new opera house and this would be his gift to the city. After that, construction of Jones Hall officially began in January 1964 at a cost of $7.4 million.
During the building's first concert, a special piece written exclusively by American composer Alan Hovhaness entitled "Ode to the Temple of Sound" was performed. Since its opening, millions of art enthusiasts have enjoyed countless theatrical and musical performances here.
Dominating the entire neighborhood, Jones Hall is stunning with its white Italian marble façade with eight-story tall columns and a brightly lit grand entrance. The interior includes a basement and an auxiliary basement, which houses a luxurious, classically designed gym.
When entering the building, visitors will see the sculpture "Gemini II" suspended right below the ceiling of the lobby up to 18m high. Gemini II is like shooting stars because it pays homage to the hall's performers and acknowledges Houston's role in space exploration.
The concert hall favored by architects offers unparalleled versatility allowing it to be a venue for several art forms. Aloft, 800 hexagons can be moved up and down to regroup volume, change the physical circumstances of the room, and control acoustics. The auditorium could literally shrink from 2,912 seats to 2,300. The atmosphere of the hall is enhanced with vibrant red velvet seating, golden teak walls.
In 1967, Jones Hall won the American Institute of Architects' Honor Award, a national award given to only one building annually.
Today, Jones Hall is home to the Houston Symphony and the Performing Arts Association. Besides, this place is often the place chosen to hold performances of many famous artists.
