At 1316 meters long, the open-air art gallery on the banks of the River Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuum still standing of the Berlin Wall. Immediately after the fall of the wall, 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the East Side Gallery, and it officially opened as an outdoor gallery on September 28, 1990. Just over a year later. , the wall has been added to the protected memorial list.
One of the particularly popular works at the East Side Gallery is “The Mortal Kiss” by artist Dmitri Vrubel, depicting the kiss of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Hönecker; and the wall-breaking "Trabant" by Birgit Kinders.
Due to its outdoor location, the East Side Gallery is completely subject to the effects of weather and vandalism, so it is regularly restored. In 1996, Kani Alavi founded the East Side Gallery with the purpose of allowing artists to protect and restore their work. In November 2018, the State of Berlin added the East Side Gallery to the property list of the Stiftung Berliner Mauer (SBM) so they could preserve the monument.
The nearby waterfront is also ideal for a stroll around the Art Gallery, sightseeing and a cold beer.
