Duyet Thi Duong

Located within the Forbidden Purple City of Hue Citadel, Duyet Thi Duong is not just an ancient royal theater but also a destination rich in the history and culture of the Nguyen Dynasty. Built in 1826 under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, this theater was once the venue for exclusive performances for the emperor, royal family, and high-ranking officials.

Unique Architecture and Space

Duyet Thi Duong occupies an area of 11,740 m², with the theater area covering 1,182 m². The interior is constructed entirely from rare ironwood, standing 12 meters high, with a ceiling featuring astronomical symbols such as the sun, moon, stars, and constellations. The stage has a unique three-sided design, providing an intimate and lively performance experience. The emperor's seat is centrally located on the second floor, flanked by couplets composed by Emperor Minh Mang. Seats for royal officials and guests are arranged around the stage, creating a dignified and unique performance space.

Surrounding Duyet Thi Duong is a large garden growing various rare herbs used in the preparation of traditional medicine at the Imperial Medical Institute, which produced medicines for the emperor and the royal family. Nearby, the Thuong Thien Department prepared special dishes exclusively for the emperor.

Historical and Artistic Significance

Duyet Thi Duong was built as a place for the emperor to review and enjoy the finest traditional Tuong (classical opera) performances. The plays performed in Duyet Thi Duong were of royal Tuong, primarily praising loyalty, patriotism, and extolling virtue. The theater also hosted special festivals, such as the longevity celebrations of Emperors Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Dong Khanh, and Khai Dinh, as well as significant events, most notably the ""Minh Mang Phi Long"" coin casting ceremony in 1833.

Renovations and Restorations

Over nearly 200 years, Duyet Thi Duong has endured weather and wartime damage, leading to many repairs. Significant restoration efforts took place from 1995 to 2002. After complete restoration, Duyet Thi Duong reopened in 2003, serving the public and welcoming visitors.

Restoration of Royal Arts

Today, Duyet Thi Duong is one of the most attractive destinations in Hue Ancient Capital, preserving and performing Hue royal court music, an intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The theater has revived 8 out of 11 ancient dances and 40 royal music pieces, along with many excerpts from classical Tuong such as ""Tam Nu Do Vuong,"" ""Son Hau,"" and ""Luc Cung Hoa Dang."" Each performance is meticulously and elaborately presented, offering visitors a vivid experience of Nguyen Dynasty royal arts.
