I. History of Tam Chuc Pagoda
The ancient Tam Chuc Pagoda was built during the Dinh Dynasty and is linked to the legend surrounding the seven prominent peaks in the area, known as the ""Seven Star Mountains."" These mountains emit light resembling seven stars, capturing the attention of locals. Legend has it that after some people chiseled the mountains to extract their light, only three stars remained, leading to the renaming of the Seven Star Pagoda to Tam Chuc Pagoda.
II. Location of Tam Chuc Pagoda
Tam Chuc Pagoda is located in Ba Sao town and Kha Phong commune, Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province, approximately 12 km from the center of Phu Ly city. Visitors have two routes to choose from:
- Route 1: From Huong Pagoda, continue straight for about 5 km.
- Route 2: Take National Highway 1, then follow Google Maps.
- Route 1 is suitable for motorbikes, while Route 2 is more appropriate for cars.
III. The Tam Chuc Pagoda Complex
The Tam Chuc Pagoda complex includes various components such as:
- Central Welcome Area
- Cultural and Spiritual Area

Within the Cultural and Spiritual Area, the most notable features are:
- Ngoc Pagoda (Heaven's Altar): Located on the peak of the Seven Star Mountain, this pagoda features Buddha statues made of granite imported from India.
- Tam Bao Hall: A large structure housing three bronze Buddha statues, each weighing 80 tons.
- Phap Chu Thich Ca Mau Ni Hall: Home to the largest Buddha statue in Southeast Asia, weighing 200 tons.
- Kinh Garden: This garden contains 99 stone pillars inscribed with sutras for the faithful.
IV. Abbot and Buddha Statues at Tam Chuc Pagoda
The abbot of Tam Chuc Pagoda is Monk Thich Thanh Nhieu, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Council. Currently, there are eight Buddha statues at the pagoda, with the statue in the Phap Chu Thich Ca Mau Ni Hall being the largest in Southeast Asia.
