Marend
“Serving Tyrolean – Austrian cuisine, in soft lamps and candles, simple pine furniture and a warm atmosphere”
Once upon a time, the people of Tyrol (a historic multinational region located in the heart of the Alps in Austria and Italy, were known for their high mountains, alpine ski resorts, typical homes of the the Tyroleans, meadows filled with flowers and grazing cows and old wooden farm buildings) came together after working in the fields for a "Marend" - a snack between meals, or a hearty snack. A snack where everyone laughs and chats, Marend is often eaten together after field work and ends with a glass of schnapps. The people of Hamburg have also begun to enjoy "Marend" in recent years. Marend restaurant located in Karo district near Feldstrasse metro station is always a busy place.
Now “Marend” has opened another branch in the old rooms of the restaurant “Biest”, in Von-der-Tann-Straße which is very popular with the locals. Once repaired, the taste of Tyrol can now be found in Marend. Owner Lisa Dialer has created a relaxed alpine atmosphere without any folklore influences. The walls and tables and chairs are made of solid wood giving off a cozy look, the fresh flowers on the table, the dark gray seat cushions and the felt covers on the benches create a friendly relaxing space.
Diners can find classic snacks including various cold cuts, mountain cheese, Tyrolese bacon, colorful salads with pumpkin seed oil and nuts to pair with cold stiegels. at restaurant. But Marend became famous for Schlutzkrapfen - cheese buns with sage butter, pink beet buns with goat cheese filling or fluffy spinach dumplings with brown butter and Parmesan - all from Salatberg; and traditional Austrian wine – schnapps (using apricots from Andi Pfeller, hazelnuts from Brandstatt, and rowan berries from Fräulein Brösel).
The main course menu at Marend is not diverse, but the servings here are very large. The veal schnitzel is crispy and delicious, the dark beef goulash comes with cheese dumplings, and as a special snack it is served with goat cheese bread, salad dressing and honey apple-pear vinegar.
The wine list at Marend may not be extensive, but it includes a wide selection of fine wines hand-picked from the rest of the restaurant owner, for example, the blends from the Rotes Haus winery or the Grüner Veltliner from Triebaumer or Gmeinböck, famously known for their high quality. delicious Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch / Cabernet wines. Various soft drinks are also served, such as the Almdudler, which Hamburg locals love to drink after a ski holiday.
Marend serves up the perfect brunch before a night out in St. Pauli, but Marend also has a reputation for being the perfect spot for cozy dates and laid-back group get-togethers.
