Linh Thu Pagoda, also known as Long Tuyen Pagoda, has a long history and is associated with many intriguing stories. According to legend, the pagoda was established during the reign of Emperor Le Canh Hung. The area where the pagoda now stands was once a desolate land, isolated from the nearby village. Local shepherd children used to bring their cows here to graze and would often gather to play. They built a small hut and fashioned Buddha statues out of clay to worship. Over time, this hut evolved into a makeshift temple where the children will play and rest.

Finally, it was from this humble beginning that the pagoda was eventually established. One day, a wandering monk came across the site, and after observing the area, he praised the excellent feng shui, foretelling that a future emperor would seek refuge here. This prophecy later came true when Emperor Gia Long (Nguyen Anh), after being defeated by the Tay Son forces, sought shelter at Linh Thuu Pagoda.

Disguised in order to avoid recognition, Emperor Gia Long, along with his loyal minister Nguyen Huynh Duc, arrived at the pagoda. Although the head monk, Nguyen Phuoc Chanh (also known as Nguyet Hien Thien Su), was unsure of their true identities, he kindly welcomed the two guests. At the time, Emperor Gia Long was suffering from a fever, but under the monk's care, his health began to improve. Once the emperor revealed his true identity, the monk helped him avoid detection by the segueing Tay Son soldiers.

A strange event occurred: when the enemy forces neared the pagoda, its door was suddenly covered in spider webs, causing the Tay Son soldiers to miss the emperor. In gratitude for the monk's help and the Buddha's blessings, Emperor Gia Long had the pagoda renovated and officially named it "The Sacred Vulture Ancient Pagoda". He also honored Nguyen Phuoc Chanh by granting him the title "Man Hue Thien Su Dai Lao Hoa Thuong" to commemorate his contributions.

Traditional Architecture of Linh Thuu Pagoda

With over 300 years of history, Linh Thuu Pagoda has preserved its traditional architectural beauty and solemn atmosphere. The pagoda’s main gate features intricate bas-reliefs, especially depicting dragons and phoenixes, crafted in a royal style. The pagoda complex houses statues of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, with a four-symbol column of fortune and stone tablets detailing its history and the successive abbots.

Inside the pagoda, a stone statue depicting the life of the Buddha can be found, along with large ancient Buddha statues in the main hall. The main hall is supported by 48 wooden columns that are over 200 years old, with meticulously carved horizontal plaques, couplets, and ornate panels. In front of the altar stands the Great Bell (Dai Hong Chung), which is famous for having saved Emperor Gia Long’s life during an escape. The bell is considered a sacred and historically valuable artifact, attracting visitors from near and far.

Also displayed in front of the altar are couplets recording Emperor Gia Long’s official recognition of the pagoda and Emperor Thieu Tri’s subsequent confirmation of the name "Linh Thuu."

How to Get to Linh Thuu Pagoda

The pagoda is open to visitors free of charge daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM for sightseeing and worship. Visitors can easily travel from the center of My Tho to the pagoda by motorbike or car. Here’s the detailed route:

From the center of My Tho -> National Road 60 -> Trung Luong Intersection -> National Road 1A -> DT870. From there, go straight for about 2 km, and at the Ap Cho intersection, turn left to reach the pagoda.
