Profile
The Dragon Bridge is not just a simple bridge spanning the Han River; it is also a cultural, historical, and architectural symbol of Da Nang City. As the sixth and most recent bridge over the Han River, the Dragon Bridge began construction on July 19, 2009, and was officially opened to traffic on March 29, 2013. With a length of 666 meters and a width of 37.5 meters, the bridge has six traffic lanes, with a total construction cost of nearly 1.5 trillion VND (approximately 88 million USD). Its unique design, resembling a winding dragon, serves not only as an important transportation link but also as a striking attraction for visitors, embodying the aspirations for freedom and creativity of the people of Da Nang.
Construction History
The journey of building the Dragon Bridge is closely linked to the development history of Da Nang. A design competition for the bridge was held at the end of 2005, with participation from eight design consulting firms. In October 2007, the design proposal by the joint venture of The Louis Berger Group and Ammann & Whitney was selected. The bridge was completed in 2013, coinciding with the 38th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation, marking a significant milestone in the urban development history of Central Vietnam.
Technical Specifications
Dragon Bridge is a testament to the ability to perfectly combine art and technology in the field of construction.
Fire and Water Breathing Capability
One of the unique features that make the Dragon Bridge a tourist symbol of Da Nang is its ability to breathe fire and spray water. Every evening at 9 PM, especially on weekends and major holidays, the bridge breathes fire and sprays water, creating an enchanting atmosphere. This spectacle not only captivates visitors but also reflects the city’s aspirations for growth, freedom, and creativity.
Unique Architecture
The Dragon Bridge is recognized as one of the most unique architectural structures in the world. Its design, resembling a dragon soaring over the Han River, not only represents traditional culture but also offers high aesthetic value. With a total weight of nearly 9,000 tons and high-strength steel girders, the bridge is built to resist corrosion, while an LED lighting system with over 2,500 points of light creates a sparkling atmosphere at night.
Significance and Importance
The Dragon Bridge is not merely a transportation project; it embodies deep cultural and historical significance for Da Nang. This structure has solidified the city’s position as an economic, political, and cultural center of Central and Central Highlands Vietnam. The Dragon Bridge promotes the development of the tourism industry, providing opportunities for those who enjoy exploring the beauty of the country in their own unique ways.
