Burano Island

icon-locationLocated 7 km north of Venice.
Burano is an island in the lagoon of Venice. It is located to the north of Venice, very close to Torcello, and is famous for its lacquer work. The island of about 4,000 inhabitants has a curiously leaning bell tower that can be seen in the distance.

Burano has become one of the most visited islands with colorful houses. Usually, neighbors are required to paint the facades of their homes and they are not allowed to choose the color, but are informed of the specific shade according to their residence. A legend is told that the houses were painted brightly and cheerfully so that sailors could see them on gloomy and foggy days.

The easiest ways to get to Burano from Venice are as follows:

Public Transportation: Take the LN water bus from Fondamenta Nuovo or San Zaccaria. The journey takes about 45 minutes.

Visitors will only need an hour or two to visit Burano, as it is a very small island. If you want to continue exploring the Venice Lagoon and its islands, we recommend taking a steamboat to Torcello once you've visited the island of Burano.
