Ghenh Temple is located in a deep alley at the foot of the slope next to Chuong Duong bridge, in Long Bien district, Hanoi. In the past, there was a waterfall in front of the temple, that's why it was called "Ghenh temple". The temple is associated with the life of Princess Le Ngoc Han, who was once considered a "fairy queen" because of her perfect talent. Ngoc Han married Quang Trung Nguyen Hue, who defeated 20,000 Qing invaders in 1789.
The love between Ngoc Han and Nguyen Hue lasted only 6 years, the sudden departure of the talented emperor made the beautiful princess of Thang Long because of mourning for her husband, she wrote the immortal work "Ai Tu Van". . Seven years later, at the age of 29, she quietly followed Quang Trung into eternity.
The Nguyen Dynasty who ascended the throne sought to eradicate and take revenge on those related to the Tay Son dynasty. Ms. Chieu suspected Nguyen Thi Huyen, regretting the fate of her daughter Ngoc Han after her death, still had to send her body to Phu Xuan - Hue, so she found a way to secretly bring the remains of the Empress of the Tay Son Dynasty back to her hometown for burial in her hometown. Nhan village, Gia Lam. Unfortunately, during the reign of King Minh Mang the tomb was revealed and the matter reached the king's ears. It is said that the puppet queen of the Tay Son Dynasty still has a beautiful grave buried in her mother's hometown, but she escaped the 9-year sentence by order of King Gia Long. The Hue court immediately sent troops to excavate the princess Ngoc Han's grave, level it with weeds, and throw the bones into the Red River. The location of the remains of Princess Ngoc Han was dumped into the Red River in the territory of Ai Mo village today.
The villagers took pity on the talented and talented Queen, who set up the main shrine on the river bank to collect the remains. But shortly after, the small temple was also swept away by the flood. In 1858, Mrs. Dang Thi Ban spent money to restore the temple in Ai Mo, the temple was also rebuilt. In 1872, the temple was again burned by the French invaders in a fire attack against Hanoi. Ban once again donated to rebuild the temple. Experiencing many ups and downs, military fire, Ghenh temple is still looked after by Ban's descendants and villagers keep the temple as a treasure to this day.
The temple currently has the main items such as: model power, paint site, ancestral house, guest house and ancillary areas. In the temple, there are still many precious relics preserved: a bell cast in Tu Duc's time, two palanquins decorated with carving art, great letters, scrolls, diaphragms and couplets. Along with precious relics, Ghenh Temple relic today has become an ancient architectural work, which is known by a large number of tourists nationwide.
Besides the tangible values, at this relic, the Ghenh Temple Festival takes place every year, which is famous throughout the country with many activities typical of the Red River Delta. The festival expresses people's wishes for a bountiful harvest, a prosperous and happy life; at the same time remembering the pain of Empress Le Ngoc Han. The Ghenh Temple Festival was first held in the reign of Thanh Thai, around 1889; starting from August 1 and ending on August 12 of the lunar calendar every year.
