Profile
Construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884 due to the Civil War. The monument, 555 ft (169m) tall, is the tallest structure in Washington and the tallest freestanding stone structure in the world.
The Washington Monument can be seen from countless points on the National Mall and beyond, but to appreciate its grandeur, get up close. The view from the west, behind the Lake of Reflection, offers an interesting photo opportunity at night when the entire structure is magically illuminated.
Visitors can visit the lower part of the tower for free at any time. However, if visitors want to visit the station and go to the top of the tower, they must book tickets in advance online, or buy tickets at the Washington Monument on duty for the day. Here, they will issue tickets on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 8:30am. Each ticket will have a timestamp for the visit and only six tickets per person can be obtained.
Note : Tickets at the Standing Room sell out very quickly and the queue can start at 7am.
Plan your trip to coincide with one of the many free concerts, theater shows or movie screenings held throughout the year at the Sylvan Theatre, a theater located at the foot of the monument. Ask the visitor center for show schedules.
The Washington Monument is on the same street as the Capitol building and the Lincoln memorial. Visitors can easily travel from these 3 points.
