Museum of Archeology - Musée De La Civilization Gallo-Romaine

Lyon stands on the site of the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum, founded in 43 BC, which was the capital of Gaul. This excellent archeology museum displays Gallo-Roman objects including vases, tombstones, mosaics, statues, coins, and pottery. The artifacts on display are from on-site excavations (from the city of Lugdunum) as well as the nearby Roman archaeological sites of Romain-en-Gal and Vienne. The collection is famous for its breadth and variety. Highlights of the collection include a monumental Hercules sculpture, decorative marble work from ancient baths, and a beautiful 100-square-meter mosaic depicting images related to Heaven. The museum also extends to the nearby archaeological site, about 300 meters from the museum. The site boasts some of the oldest ruins in France, including two Roman theatres. The Grand Théâtre dates back to 15 BC, where tragedies and comedies were performed. The Odéon is the theater for musical performances. There is also the foundation of a temple dedicated to the Goddess Cybele.
