1. Introduction to Da Nhim Lake

Da Nhim Lake, also known as Don Duong Lake, is located at an altitude of 1,040 meters above sea level, in Don Duong District, about 40 km southeast of Da Lat City. With a water surface area of about 10 km², the lake stretches like a giant mirror reflecting the clear blue sky. It is surrounded by mountain ranges and vast pine forests.

Da Nhim Lake not only provides water for agriculture and daily life but is also an important hydroelectric power source, contributing to the local economy.

The lake was formed from the construction of the Da Nhim hydroelectric dam in the 1960s. This project is considered a symbol of friendship between Vietnam and Japan, as it was funded and technically supported by the Japanese government.

2. The Story of Da Nhim Lake

The name "Da Nhim Lake" is linked to the Da Nhim River and signifies the harmony between nature and humans. According to the legend of the K'Ho people, the Da Nhim River was formed as follows:

Long ago, in Kon Do village, Dung K'No commune, Lac Duong district, there was a couple: the husband named Ha Biang and the wife named K'Lang. One year, the entire region suffered from a drought. Ha Biang set out to ask the heavens for rain, but when he reached Gang-reo Mountain in Duc Trong district, he died of starvation. K’Lang followed the trail of broken saplings left by Ha Biang to find him. Upon finding her husband's body, K'Lang wept bitterly, her cries echoing across “eight mountains, eight rivers, eight forests, eight streams” and reaching the heavens. The heavens sent a rain god to pour rain down on earth, but K'Lang continued to cry until she died. Her tears moved the lead elephant, which came to shield K'Lang and Ha Biang from the rain, and it cried and died alongside them. The rainwater mixed with the tears of K'Lang and the elephant, forming the Da Nhim River (da: water, nhim: cry).
