The location of this iconic structure is next to the Taj Hotel on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg in South Mumbai and overlooks the Arabian Sea. Built in Indo-Saracenic style - a fusion of Indian and Islamic architecture, the foundation stone for the Gateway to India was laid on March 31, 1911. The structure is a arch made of basalt, 26 meters high. It has 4 clearly carved turrets with an intricate grid system. When walking behind the structure, there are steps leading to the Arabian coast. It is from here that visitors can board a boat to go to Elephanta Cave.

The India Gate was designed by George Wittet, George Wittet's final design was approved in 1914 and construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The India Gate was later used as a ceremonial entrance symbolic entry into India for the Governor-General and the new Governor of the city of Bombay.

It is also known as Mumbai's Taj Mahal, and is the city's top tourist attraction, with nature lovers and photographers alike coming to admire its charms.
