Located inside Shikotsu-Toya National Park among the high cliffs of the Toyohira River, surrounded by many trees, this hot spring area has a beautiful natural scenery like a charming painting.

Just an hour away from central Sapporo, Jozankei Onsen (定 山 渓 温泉, Jōzankei Onsen) has long been a must-visit destination when traveling to Hokkaido.

The history of Jozankei Hot Springs dates back to Keio 2 (1866), when Miizumi Jozan, an ascetic monk, discovered the hot springs and opened a healing spa on the upper reaches of the Toyohira River. He put a lot of effort into developing this area into the famous hot tub spot it is today. There are 56 hot spring sources in the town of Jozankei.

Jozankei Onsen is located in the area where three rivers: Usubetsu, Shiroi and Otarunai empty into the main stream of the Toyohiora River. Jozankei's water is colorless and transparent, and has a slight salt content (neutral hypotonic hot spring). The source of hot water flows abundantly from the rocks at the riverbank and underground geysers under the riverbank, with a temperature of 60 - 80 degrees, when you soak in it, you will find your body becomes warm from the inside. This is because the salt component clings to the body to prevent sweat from evaporating.

Currently, the town has dozens of ryokan (a type of traditional Japanese inn), high-class resorts, restaurants and many shops serving tourists. Furthermore, you can find free footbaths around town.

Coming to Jozankei Onsen, visitors can not only enjoy the feeling of relaxation while soaking in the steaming hot water in the beautiful natural scenery, but also experience many interesting activities here such as horse riding. , hiking through the woods, or skiing in the winter.
