Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum
Architecture enthusiasts and Art Deco lovers should not miss a visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. Lovers of gardens and sculptures will also enjoy the museum grounds
Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum takes its name from the gardens surrounding it - 'teien' is a Japanese-style garden. There is a Western-style garden as well as a Japanese-style walking garden on the museum grounds. So if you're not interested in museums, you can also visit the gardens for just 100 yen.
Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, was originally built as Prince Asaka's residence in 1933 and converted into a museum 50 years later. Every year about four exhibitions are held here with items ranging from paintings to jewelry to crafts.
Built in an elegant Art Deco style and featuring some beautiful decorative glass work by René Lalique, the museum is well worth a visit for its architecture and interiors. The building represents a great balance between Japanese and Western aesthetics over the French Art Deco style and is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts.
