The Eternal Golden Fort was built in 1876 to strengthen Taiwan's defense against the threat of the Japanese army. This is the first fortress with Western architecture in the island nation of Taiwan, based on the design of French engineers, is considered a great step forward in modernizing the coastal military defense force. of Taiwan.

The fortress was built in 1874 and completed in 1876 by Shen Baozhen, a famous Qing Dynasty general to protect the coast and territory of the island nation of Taiwan against Japanese invasions. This military facility first operated during the Sino-French war in 1884. When Taiwan was ceded by the Qing Dynasty to the Japanese Empire in 1895, the people of Taiwan fought under the banner of the Republic of Formosa. In terms of construction, the fortress has a square shape, following the design of a diamond castle in Western countries, with four corners protruding and the middle indenting. Around the fortress there is a protective moat, inside there are large and small cannons, in the center there is an area for a training ground. With a complete and complete shape and elaborate design, the Eternal Golden Fortress is considered a great step forward in the modernization of Taiwan's coastal military defenses. Over the years, the fortress was once crumbling, and neglected. But then it was ranked by the Taiwanese government as one of the historical sites that need to be restored and preserved.

After being restored, the fortress has gradually regained its original image with solid walls nearly 2 meters high, surrounding deep moats, dense trees, arched gates 5 meters high with raw materials. The raw materials were mainly obtained from the neighboring An Binh fortress. Especially some of the bronze sculptures are reminiscent of the talented general Shen Baozhen, who built the fortress in its early days.

The fortress is open daily from 08.30 AM to 05.30 PM, entrance fee is NT50. From Tainan city center, you can take bus number 14 or 88 and get off at Yizai Jincheng - Eternal Golden Castle stop; or take bus 99 and get off at Taijiang Road and walk a few minutes to the Eternal Golden Fort.
