Profile
The Tomb of the First President of the Republic of Turkey is a beautifully designed museum that attracts tourists, historians and architects. This is a large complex divided into four parts.
Upon entering the mausoleum, visitors will encounter two square kiosks and a number of stylized statues. The kiosk on the right shows a model of the Anitkabir complex and photos taken during its construction. Continue along a monumental boulevard lined with stone lion statues from the Neo-Hittite era to reach the main courtyard.
To the right, upon entering the courtyard is a monument to General Ismet Inönü below the western colonnade. Inönü (EE-ner-new), the victorious general in the Turkish battle for independence, is a friend of Kemal Atatürk, comrade, chief of staff, diplomat, prime minister and second president of the Republic of Turkish peace.
Opposite the Inönü cenotaph is the Anıtkabir, whose structure is simple and timeless in style but grand and majestic.
As you pass through the monumental steps to enter, you can see the golden inscriptions on either side, which are excerpts from Atatürk's speech given on the 10th anniversary of the reading. Declaration of independence of the republic in 1932.
The large hall, lined with red marble, has a simple mosaic decoration reminiscent of many eras and civilizations of Anatolia such as: Hittite, Hellenic, Roman, Seljuk, Ottoman.
In front, to the north, is a huge block of marble, the actual tomb of Atatürk lying beneath it. On the east side of the courtyard, a museum holds Atatürk's personal works and memorabilia, as well as a number of cars used when he was alive.
Lion's Road is a long walking path where Turkish soldiers march during parade days while Peace Park is filled with vegetation with a Turkish flag made entirely of flowers. Visitors can also use the multilingual automatic audio guide to learn more about the life of this first president as well as the most important period in Turkish history.
