Inaugurated in 2009 by Pratibha Patil, then prime minister of India, Vipassana Pagoda took over 8 years to build. While construction planning began in 1997, actual work on the main structure began in 2000 and ended in 2008. The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a giant three-storey hollow stone structure whose pyramid is inlaid with real gold and topped with a decorative umbrella donated by Myanmar. It is said to be the world's largest columnless dome, specially designed for meditation. The structure's wooden main doors are also hand-carved in Myanmar, while the main building material is sandstone brought from Rajasthan. The construction of the temple is a combination of the best of modern and ancient Indian technology, preparing it to last for thousands of years.
The relics are enshrined in the center of the central dome and a revolving stage is created in the center of the main dome at ground level so that one can meditate around it while listening to lectures. It has the capacity to hold more than 8,000 people meditating at the same time. The complex also has an audio-visual center and a gallery of photographs and wall shelves adjacent to a bookstore and souvenir shop.
