Program schedule

🕘 1. Mother Suot Monument – The Heart of Nhat Le River

“Mother rowed a boat carrying troops across the fire and bullets. Mother was not afraid of bombs. Mother was not afraid of death. Mother was only afraid that the country would have no tomorrow.” The tour guide took visitors to stop by the poetic Nhat Le River, where the statue of Mother Suot stood tall – a simple woman who rowed a boat amid bombs and bullets to take soldiers across the river. Mother Nguyen Thi Suot (1906–1968), from Xuan Bac village, Dong Hoi, was a boat rower on the Nhat Le River throughout the resistance war against the US. With a wooden oar and courage, mother rowed through the fire and bullets to take hundreds of soldiers, weapons, and wounded soldiers across the river. In 1968, mother sacrificed herself when hit by an American bomb. She was later posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces. “That small woman – along with the river – became a living symbol of patriotism deep within the people.”

🕙 2. Execution area of female general Bui Thi Xuan

– A tragic page of history “She did not cry. She held her child. She looked up to the sky. And she held her head high in the cold eyes of the enemy.” The tour guide led the group to the ancient mound near Dong Hoi citadel – where history books and oral tradition recorded that Bui Thi Xuan was executed after the defeat of the Tay Son dynasty. Bui Thi Xuan was a famous female general of the Tay Son dynasty, originally from Binh Dinh, famous for her martial arts and loyalty. After Nguyen Anh’s army captured Phu Xuan (Hue), she was captured with her daughter. In Dong Hoi, she was trampled by elephants – a cruel form of execution at that time. The greatest pain was not death, but seeing her child being executed before her eyes. 💬 “People can kill her body – but cannot kill the spirit of a mother – a general.”

🕚 3. Dai Giac Pagoda

– Tranquility in the heart of Dong Hoi The ancient pagoda is located on the banks of the Nhat Le River, where local people have repeatedly held memorial ceremonies for their ancestors, including Bui Thi Xuan. Visitors can offer incense and light candles to pray in the quiet space, as a way to remember and show gratitude.

🍽️ 4. Lunch along Nhat Le River

Dine at a local restaurant with dishes such as: porridge, fish stewed with turmeric, shrimp paste, shrimp pancakes, grilled river fish with salt and pepper... The tour guide tells stories about Quang Binh cuisine: simple, flavorful, and full of the harsh climate of the Central region.

5. Down the Nhat Le River

– The flow of history Tourists board a boat, going upstream on Nhat Le River – a seemingly small river, but carrying within it the past of war, poetry, and nostalgia. The tour guide tells about the battles to protect the river, the bridges that were bombed, and the silent boatmen like Mother Suot who “protected the river with their hearts.” 💬 “Nhat Le River not only carries water – but also carries the past, carries the dreams of an unyielding nation.”

🕒 6. Nhan Trach fishing village

– The seaport of the poor and gentle Visit Nhan Trach fishing village – where the livelihood is closely linked to the sea, fishing nets, bamboo boats and fishermen living a quiet but proud life. Visitors can: Observe the scene of drying fish, removing nets, mending boats. Listen to stories about seafaring customs, fishing ceremonies, and the life of Quang Binh fishermen.

🌉 7. Nhan Trach pontoon bridge

– Floating bridge in the middle of the estuary Walking across Nhan Trach pontoon bridge, the floating bridge connecting the two banks of Cua Dai river, is both rustic and unique. This is an interesting check-in spot, where you can clearly feel the daily life of the fishing village – between sky, water and wind.
