Milan's Duomo, or cathedral, is the world's largest Gothic cathedral. Construction began in 1386, but it took nearly 500 years to complete. More than 130 spiers and more than 3,000 statues adorn the roof of the Duomo; Take the elevator (or climb the stairs) to the rooftop for a close-up view. You'll also catch some great views of the city. Below, Milan's Piazza Milan del Duomo, the square where the cathedral is located, is the heart of the historic center of the city. The square is also home to statues of Vittorio Emanuele and the Palazzo Reale containing the Duomo Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
