In the center of Union Square is a tall Corinthian column with a statue of the goddess of victory Victoria on top. This is also known as the Dewey Memorial, commemorating the victory of Admiral George Dewey in 1898 at Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

Today, Union Square is also the third largest shopping center in the United States. The main store of the Macy's department store chain as well as famous high-end retailers such as Neiman-Marcus and Nordstrom's are located here. In addition to major shopping malls, Union Square is also home to art galleries and boutique boutiques.
