Phuket

Phuket, city and island, southern Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea, off the west coast of peninsular Thailand. The city of Phuket, located in the southeast of the island, is a major commercial center and port. Its harbor is an export place for tin, rubber, charcoal, lumber and fish products. Phuket Airport has regular flights to Bangkok, towns in southern Thailand and George Town, Malaysia.
The island's surface area is mostly flat but is dotted with isolated hills up to 520m high. The earliest human settlement on the island was in the 1st century BC. The island has been part of the various Tai states since early times and was incorporated into the kingdom of Ayutthaya around the 16th century. After the 18th century, a large number of Chinese came here and now more than one Half of the current population on the island is Chinese.
Phuket is noted for its rich tin mines. Ore, found in lowland gravel and in shallow seabeds. The island has also become a famous seaside resort in the world. From the mainland, the island can be reached via a bridge over a narrow strait. A road connecting the main settlements of Thalang, Phuket and Ban Rawai.
