Church of St. Stephen in Hungary Szent István-Bazilika is a catholic church located in the center of Budapest. The structure was originally intended to be named after Saint Leopold, patron of Austria, but later the church was named after the first king of Hungary, whose right arm was preserved in his temple. Basilica. This day, St. Stephen's Basilica is the third largest church in Hungary. Many sculptors contributed to the interior decoration of the cathedral, with more than 50 different types of marble used to shape the sculptures.
In the early 1800s, several hundred people founded Lipótváros Parish and began raising funds to build a fortified church, today St. Stephen's Basilica. The church was completed in 1905, after 54 years of construction. The work was started by architect Miklós Ybl and completed by József Kauser.
St. Stephen's Basilica is built in the Neoclassical style and features a Greek diagonal floor plan. The façade is characterized by two large bell towers. In the south tower there is a large Hungarian bell. The two towers have six bells together: five are located in the north bell, while the largest one is in the south tower. This largest bell is used about twice a year: on August 20 - the day of the consecration of the church, and on December 31. St. Stephen's Basilica has played a very active role in the Budapest music scene, since its consecration in 1905. The church's nine organists have always been highly qualified musicians. In the last century, the basilica has hosted choral and classical music performances, as well as contemporary music performances.
