Profile
Zoos are home to rare animals.
A mighty brown bear roams everywhere. A few feet away, otters swim and splash through the water and a bearded vulture looks down on visitors from above in a tree. Dish? No, don't worry. It ate very well and found a safe haven in the Alpine Zoo. For the animals of the Alps are equally endangered as rare species from the steppes, jungles and deserts. The Alpine Zoo does a lot of conservation of different species, providing a home for animals that live in the mountains such as birds of prey, chamois and marmots. Visitors can observe these animals up close - a highlight for the whole family and well worth a visit for adults!
When church bells rang in Innsbruck, the wolves of Alpine Zoo howled together. The graceful lynx remains calm by comparison except during mating season in February when males make noise to mark their territory. Nearby, a golden eagle gazed into the distance. These birds of prey are the largest in the Alps and have eyes three times stronger than humans. Did you know that this species was almost wiped out in the 19th century? A fate it shares with other animals in the zoo, such as brown bears, wolves and bearded vultures. Several species have now recovered through breeding and reintroduction programs into the wild, including animals from the Alpine Zoo.
Different animals from the Alpine Zoo have offspring each year. Most animals are born between April and June, so summer is the best time to visit if you want to watch them jump around and explore the world. In spring you can see newly hatched birds. The farm animals in the guest barn sometimes even give birth during the winter.
The Alps Zoo is open year-round - some animals, such as reptiles, amphibians and marmots, sleep through the winter but most are alert and enjoyable during the colder months.
