The Church of Sant'Agata takes its name from the city's patron saint, its feast day is celebrated on 5 February. Built by order of Count Ruggero on the ruins of a Roman building named is the "bathroom of Achilliane", the present church was built in 1711, as part of a city restoration project by Girolamo Palazzotto. Of note is the lavish façade with a marble entrance gate belonging to the earlier old church used by Vaccarini as an element of continuity with the past. From a door located on the right side of the façade, access is possible to the remains of the Achillian Baths.
To speed up the construction of the church, Earl Roger ordered that the necessary lava stone be returned from the Roman amphitheater and the theater of the imperial age. In the original structure of the Norman church, only the body of the dome, the two central towers, and the three semicircular peaks have been preserved to this day.
Completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693, the church was rebuilt between 1733 and 1761 by the musician Vaccarini. Then in 1709 the architect Palazzotto began to build it on top of the existing structures. .
The interior is ornate with frescoes by Roman Giovan Battista Corradini striking in the center, depicting the Canonization of Sant'Agata, while the two columns at the base of the arch and the single lancet window are of origin. from the Middle Ages. In the right nave there is a monument to musician Vincenzo Bellini, the famous classical composer. Born in Catania in 1801, he was the author of many operas, including Norm Norma, his masterpiece. To the right is the lavish chapel of Sant'Agata connected with precious relics. It is also the burial place of many Norman, Swabian and Aragonese royalty.
The Church of Saint Sant'Agata is open to the public free of charge and is an indispensable destination in any visitor's visit to the dreamy city of Catarina.
