Museum Square

Is a public space in the Museumkwartier neighborhood of the Amsterdam-Zuid district in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Amsterdam's most famous museums centered around this public square are: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum - and the Concertgebouw concert hall.

The area was originally a wax candle factory and marsh meadows. Construction began after the completion of the Rijksmuseum in 1885, with the street planning based on designs by Pierre Cuypers, the museum's famous architect. The area was the site of the International Colonial and Export Exhibition in 1883.

Museumplein was reconstructed after a design by Swedish/Danish landscape architect Sven-Ingvar Andersson in 1999. It now includes underground parking lots and an underground supermarket. In winter, the pond can be converted into an artificial ice skating rink.

The space is also used for (mass) events such as festivals, celebrations and demonstrations and Armin Van Buuren honored Team Holland at Museumplein in 2010 by playing the role of the Swedish House Mafia.

In July 2017, the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2017, the 3x3 European basketball tournament, was held at Museumplein. The main sign "I AMsterdam" was also located here in front of the Rijksmuseum, until December 4, 2018, when it was removed by order of the city council.

The sculpture "Portrait of a Dreamer" by Joseph Klibansky was exhibited in the pond from June 26, 2018 to August 28, 2018.
