Church of Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli

The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, a church born from strong Venetian feelings and religious sentiments, is one of the few Venetian constructions that has not been restored over time, but in fact is still intact. Designed by Bergamo architect Pietro Sector, it was built to house a small painting of the Madonna that the Venetians celebrated as magical, from which the sacred building takes its name.

In a Venice where Gothic architecture still dominates the urban fabric, the Renaissance Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli represents an example of architecture with a new language inspired by the elements. elements of ancient Greece.

The church overlooks the Campo dei Miracoli, and thus the entire main façade can be admired with a curved dome and a richly ornate pediment of rose and octagonal windows, over which is the Father God , flanked by two angels, balances the simplicity of the lines and ornamentation below, revealing the solidity of the structures.

On the entrance gate, a circular waterwheel contains a bust depicting "Madonna and the Child" by sculptor Giovanni Giorgio Lascaris, while along the entire construction between the second arches are placed round bars with bas-reliefs of the prophets, in the corners becoming full-length angels. The entire exterior was then covered with multicolored marble, which, according to legend, is the remains of the construction of the Basilica of San Marco.

The interior features a single nave flanked by a vault richly decorated with gilded wooden coffins with paintings of prophets and patriarchs within. This rich decoration is perfectly balanced by the floor below in multicolored marbles drawing the usual geometric shapes by Pietro’Ronaldo.
