Built between 1733 and 1746, Asam church (real name Saint Johann Nepomuk Church) was designed by two architect brothers Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid QuirinAsam, who lived in a house next to the house of worship. their luxury. With the intention of building this church for themselves, the hierarchy required them to be open to the public.
With only 12 rows of seats, Asam Cathedral is one of the smallest churches in Munich, but it is one of the most beautiful in the city. Outside, the church is a fine example of old German Baroque architecture. The ceiling and interior walls of the chapel are covered with frescoes by Cosmas Asam and the rest of the wall space is a dark red room.
Above the doorway is a beautiful statue of Saint Nepomuk himself – a 14th-century Dutch monk who drowned on the Danube River – led to heaven by the angels of God. Nepomuk appears again in a lavish fresco on the ceiling. The high altar is surrounded by four twisted columns and a glass shrine containing the wax figure of the church's name. The roofs above depict God the Father bowing down to the crucified Christ. Two angels, sculpted by the famous traditional Bavarian Rococo sculptor, Ignaz Günther.
