Profile
Danube Island (Donauinsel) is a long and narrow artificial island in central Vienna, Austria, located between the Danube River and the parallel Neue Donau canal. The island is 21.1 km long but only 70–210 m wide. It was built between 1972 and 1988 mainly as a flood prevention measure.
Danube Island is not only an island, but also a unique resort and entertainment area. The island is the product of an extremely unique engineering project, when a part of the Danube River was created to control floods and create a new space. This is also where you have the opportunity to play sports from rollerblading, cycling and swimming to rowing. There's a beach that from the start feels so exotic that it was quickly nicknamed "Copa Cagrana" as a humorous reference to Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana: Kagran is part of Vienna's 22nd District next to that beach. On the south and north of the island, there are extensive (and free) nude beaches.
Along the riverbank, Danube Island is a meeting place for happy picnics, where people can relax on white sand beaches, immersing themselves in the cool green space of plants. At the same time, the island is also a venue for art, music, and cultural events, attracting a large number of tourists and the local community. If you want to enjoy a unique view, try choosing one of the cruise ships along the river, where you can see Danube Island from a new and interesting perspective.
Danube Island is not just a tourist attraction, but a story of Viennese creativity, engineering and vitality. Start your adventure on this island and discover the wonders that Donauinsel is waiting for you to discover!
