“The most ambitious inner-city development in Europe: modern architecture parallels the city’s UNESCO historic sites”

The largest urban development in Europe today, HafenCity is located in the heart of the port city of Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, on the northern slopes of the river Elbe. The project replaces an outdated industrial harbor in the city center location, and transforms it into a “knowledge economy” area with new offices, community facilities, residential, entertainment and many community spaces where locals and visitors can walk and cycle freely.

Today, the most prominent landmark in HafenCity, and also the city's new landmark: the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg - a concert hall with striking facades and cutting-edge acoustics, built on the foundations of an old warehouse, defined the city's skyline.

HafenCity's modern architecture contrasts sharply with Speicherstadt, a nearby historic warehouse district. Together with the Kontorhausviertel (Commercial Quarter) and Chilehaus (Chile House), it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list and is a must-see on any Hamburg itinerary.

To emphasize the importance of people over means of transportation, a range of options are offered to HafenCity residents such as bicycle and pedestrian paths, bus and metro connections, and in the future, car-sharing services including trams, creating a pedestrian-friendly space.
