Kosciuszko Mound is a large man-made hill located in Krakow, Poland. It was built in the early 19th century in memory of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Poland's national hero and leader of the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794 against the Russian Empire. The mound located in the Krakow district is called Sławków and is a popular tourist destination.
Kosciuszko Mound was built between 1820 and 1823, under the direction of Jan Feliks Piwarski, a Polish architect and engineer. The mound is made of earth and clay, is about 38 meters high and has a bottom diameter of about 120 meters. Around the mound, there are moats and stone walls, there are stairs leading to the top of the mound, from here visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Krakow city.
At the top of the mound there is a small stone chapel, in which there is a statue of Tadeusz Kosciuszko and the inscription "To Tadeusz Kosciuszko, leader of the Uprising of 1794, from the State of Poland."
Kosciuszko Mound is also an important historical site, as it was the site of the first reading of the Polish national anthem, "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego," in 1797. The anthem was written by Józef Wybicki, a friend and also was a supporter of Kosciuszko, and for the first time it was played on top of a mound.
Kosciuszko Mound is also an important symbol of Polish nationalist movements, and it has been the site of many patriotic and political gatherings throughout history. It is also one of the few places in Poland to fly the Polish flag during the period of division and oppression of Poland in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Kosciuszko Mound is a popular destination for tourists and is visited by thousands of people each year. The mound is open to the public year-round, and admission is free.
