“One of the largest concert halls with the most advanced acoustics in the world”

In the HafenCity of the port city of Hamburg, the Elbphilharmonie has emerged as a new cultural site. The Elphilharmonie is a composite work of art: it combines innovative architecture with a distinctive location, outstanding acoustics and a world-class concert programme.

Elbphilharmonie consists of three concert halls, a hotel, 45 private apartments and a public square with 360-degree panoramic views of the city. The central part is a world-class concert hall with a height of 50 meters and 2,100 seats, separated from the rest of the building for soundproofing. Elbphilharmonie's standout feature is its 1,000 curved window panels, specifically designed to capture and reflect the colors of the sky, sunbeams, river waters and cities, transforming the concert hall into a giant crystal. The glass facades in the loggias of the apartments and recreation rooms are particularly striking: with their bold convex shape, they look like giant tuning forks.

To ensure perfect acoustic acoustics, world-renowned acoustics expert Yasuhisa Toyota created The White Skin, which consists of a composite of 10,000 gypsum fiber panels of a blend of natural gypsum and recycled paper. The panels are milled according to 3D calculations to obtain the acoustically optimal surface structure. They meet the highest requirements for sound quality, weight, fire resistance and durability.

The organ in the Grand Hall also celebrates Elbphilharmonie's idea of a "concert hall for all," which does not hover somewhere out of reach, but is integrated into seats across three floors of the hall. The feel is allowed The 15x15 meter organ is finished with a specially crafted protective layer, so that the surface of the pipes is not damaged.

Concertgoers can access the Grand Hall and Recital Hall by stairs and elevator from Elbphilharmonie Plaza. The Grand Hall defines the Elbphilharmonie's architectural character with its staircase spanning several floors. Stairs enclose the concert hall generously, creating dramatic lighting effects and providing spectacular views of the city, the Elbe and the harbor from each level of the hall.
