Profile
The Downtown Container Park construction project was announced in May 2012 with shops, restaurants and bars inside the shipping containers. This idea is taken from other projects like Boxpark in London.
Although the project initially consisted of only shipping containers, the design plan was later changed to include metal cubes for gas, mine and oil extraction locally created by Xtreme Manufacturing. In parallel, the containers are provided by ConGlobal Industries - a company in Los Angeles. The use of shipping containers was initially seen as a viable cost-effective way to build the project. However, as the plan is expanded, the final construction cost is close to that of traditional construction methods.
Downtown Container Park officially opened on December 5, 2013 with 43 shipping containers and 41 cubes and 38 leased premises including a restaurant, bar, art store and clothing store. The containers, stacked two and three high, are customized for the needs of each business, and are fitted with insulation and windows. This place is completely different and has its own style compared to the quiet luxury malls found in casinos in Las Vegas.
The entrance to the complex is marked by a huge metal sculpture depicting a praying mantis spewing fire from its antennae next to the Love Locket - a metal sculpture for allowing visitors to attach love locks to it.
Inside the heart of Downtown Container Park is a children's playground area consisting of an artificial tree and treehouse made from four shipping containers, with slides and interactive game boards. Kids can also play with the NEOS Playworld System, a video game that encourages them to race around while tapping on flashing lights.
The west side of Downtown Container Park has many small galleries while the east side focuses on fashion and accessories. Since shipping containers don't have a lot of floor space, this is quite interesting and makes the stores here unique and special. There are no branded stores on the premises of the complex, instead, visitors can focus on seeing the new local products.
In terms of entertainment, the complex features The Dome, a 25-seat mini theater that shows short videos on the ceiling, often accompanied by loud rock music and wild lights for visitors.
Food is an important part of the experience here with food outlets scattered throughout the premises. Guests can dine at BBQ Big Ern's locally loved for their southern style, or Bin 702 which serves wine by tap and bottle along with light sandwiches and salads, or enjoy the sweet flavors of cakes and frozen desserts at the Sweet Spot Candy Shop.
Downtown Container Park is an interesting place for those who love to shop at the local shops and breathe in the fresh air or simply see the sculptures here.
