Dialogue in the Dark

The Dialoghaus in Speicherstadt is a place that puts respect for the disabled in general and the visually impaired in particular. It connects people in a playful way by focusing on skills rather than disabilities. At Hamburg's Dialoghaus, three different exhibitions create mutual awareness and respect for people who are blind or deaf, as well as for the elderly.

Upon entering the Dialogue in the Dark exhibit, an invisible landscape emerges, consisting of sounds, scents, winds, and textures. Each tour can last up to 1.5 hours as visitors explore a park, a city, start the trip and enjoy coffee & appetizers. Groups will be led through the dark by a blind guide. Guides will assist visitors to go through their daily routine: visit a street market, cross a busy street, have dinner with friends. In complete darkness, these situations become a challenge for visitors who have never experienced visual difficulties. That way, a change of perspective is always noticed on each tour. Visually impaired people become ambassadors in their world to bring a new perspective to people with healthy vision while experiencing dark environments. After each tour, pity turns into respect, admiration and sympathy.

In 2014, a second exhibition was added, Dialog im Stillen, which leads people through a world without sound. A deaf guide introduces children and adults to body language and mute language for the deaf to help them master everyday situations.

In addition, Dialoghaus also organizes workshops or dinners in complete darkness so that guests can experience and gain a deeper understanding of the daily life of the visually impaired.
