Tha Pae Gate

Tha Pae Gate in Chiang Mai has a long history, stretching back to when the city was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom between the 13th and 18th centuries. During the city's formation in the 13th century , the Tha Pae gate and its enclosing walls were built for defensive purposes in case of attack, mainly by the Mongol Empire's army in Burma. Large and small invasions over the centuries have left much of the wall in ruins, but fortunately the Tha Pae Gate remains mostly intact and has been rebuilt over the years.

Today, Tha Pae Gate is the center of tourism, one of the most famous amusement areas in Chiang Mai attracting visitors from morning till late evening.
