Historical Origins
The inception of One Pillar Pagoda stems from a dream experienced by King Lý Thái Tông, in which he saw the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara sitting on a lotus throne. Encouraged by Zen Master Thiền Tuệ, the king commissioned the construction of this uniquely designed pagoda, which stands on a stone pillar rising from the waters of Lake Linh Chiểu. Throughout its history, this site has faced numerous challenges, including destruction by French forces in 1954, followed by subsequent restoration efforts.
Unique Architecture
Today, One Pillar Pagoda showcases a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. The pagoda stands on a 4-meter high stone pillar, resembling a lotus flower rising from the water's surface. The eaves curve gracefully at all four corners, adorned with the image of “two dragons worshiping the moon,” symbolizing power and authority in Vietnamese culture. The temple grounds feature a flourishing Bodhi tree, gifted by Indian President Rajendra Prasad, enhancing the spiritual value of this site.
Cultural and Tourism Value
In modern times, One Pillar Pagoda attracts both domestic and international visitors, serving as a venue for various cultural and spiritual activities. Every year, on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month, locals and tourists gather for the Buddha Bathing Ceremony, praying for health and peace.
Recognized as a national historical and cultural relic since 1962, One Pillar Pagoda was designated as a “Vietnam Record” by the Vietnam Record Organization in 2006. By 2012, it was acknowledged by the Asia Book of Records as the pagoda with the most unique architecture.
