My Thuan Bridge: A Majestic Symbol Connecting the Mekong Delta

My Thuan Bridge, the first cable-stayed bridge across the Mekong River in Vietnam, plays a key role in linking the provinces of Tien Giang and Vinh Long. Inaugurated in 2000 after a long preparation process beginning in the 1950s, My Thuan Bridge has become a symbol of the vital infrastructure of the Mekong Delta, facilitating the flow of goods and connecting the southwestern provinces to Ho Chi Minh City.

My Thuan Bridge is located on National Highway 1A, connecting Hoa Hung Commune in Tien Giang with Tan Hoa Ward in Vinh Long. This bridge is not only one of the main transportation routes in the region but also a significant tourist attraction due to its modern cable-stayed design. It serves as a crucial link for trade and makes travel easier for passengers moving between provinces in the Mekong Delta.

2. Development History and Funding Sources

The construction of My Thuan Bridge faced numerous challenges in its early stages due to financial constraints and political issues. The project was officially promoted with funding from the Australian government, which provided 66% of the total investment, while the remaining funds were contributed by Vietnam. My Thuan Bridge is not only a symbol of economic connectivity but also a testament to international cooperation.

3. Design and Special Technical Features

My Thuan Bridge stretches 1,535.2 meters, with the main span being 660 meters long and the approach bridges measuring 875.2 meters. Designed according to Australian standards (AUSROADS-92), the bridge is built to handle heavy traffic loads and ensure long-term durability. The bridge features four lanes for vehicles and two pedestrian lanes, with a total width of 23 meters, helping to alleviate traffic congestion at the former My Thuan ferry crossing.

4. Cable System and Bridge Piers

The bridge's cable system is arranged in a fan-shaped pattern, which helps stabilize the load and increases the bridge's overall strength. The H-shaped towers stand 123.5 meters tall, providing a solid foundation for the cables, ensuring the bridge's safety and durability against natural forces. Notably, the anchor piers are reinforced to prevent displacement of the towers, ensuring the bridge's long-term stability.

5. Role and Significance

My Thuan Bridge has significantly improved transportation, reducing travel time and contributing to the local economic development. It also paved the way for the construction of other modern bridges in Vietnam, including the My Thuan 2 Bridge, which was completed in 2023 to ease congestion on the original bridge and connect with the Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway.
