The Central Military Club in Sofia is one of the masterpieces of Bulgarian architecture because it is one of the most monumental buildings built after 1878 when Bulgaria re-established its own state after the colonial period. ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Originally, the building was called the Officers' Club and its halls were used for receptions, festivals, balls and various events by the fledgling capital's elite, a larger part belonging to about the military class.
The club is located at the intersection of the famous Tsar Osvoboditel Avenue, opposite the Crystal Garden and the Russian church of St. Nicholas. The Military Club was first built in 1895 and designed in a renaissance style by Czech architect Antonín Kolář. The construction of the building was completed by a Bulgarian architect - Nikola Lazarov in 1907. The club's concert hall boasts a sound system and elegant decorations of various styles are cleverly added to the architecture. The hall here is lit by graceful chandeliers, purchased from Vienna, radiating a sense of style and aristocratic sophistication. Its stage has seen series of famous musicians, actors and opera singers such as Krastyu Sarafov, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Feodor Chaliapin, Boris Christoff. The Central Military Club also has the Central Military Library, which owns more than 120,000 books.
The 2010 World Chess Championship match between Viswanathan Anand of India and Vaselin Topalov of Bulgaria was held at this club building.
