The entrance to the wine cellar is integrated right inside the Rio hotel's casino, which is a long spiral staircase with iron railing accented with grape motifs, which is likened to an elegant approach.
It is considered a good wine venue with the atmosphere of a friendly, high-class wine tasting room and high arches of brick and stone. Visitors to the cellar can view a large collection of wines housed in temperature-controlled cabinets within the walls. This collection emphasizes international wines, in addition to domestic bottles mostly from California.
It also preserves a large collection of high-value wines, dating from 1858 to the 1900s. Some bottles produced in years of major events will be marked with a caption. , a prime example is a bottle of wine in 1929 labeled the crash of Wall Street.
Bottle of wine 1800 Madeira (an archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa known for its wines of the same name and warm climate) in the collection of Thomas Jefferson - the third president of the United States since 2005. 1801 to 1809 are among the treasured collectibles at the Rio cellar. The label on the bottle has deteriorated and the writing is hard to read, however, this is a bottle of the famous politician and he may well have touched it which is what makes it so special.
Besides the bottles of historical significance, some other bottles inside the cellar are sometimes a real treasure because of their value. A 1924 bottle of Mouton Rothschild that sold for $200,000 is a prime example. Because, until 1924, it was customary to sell wine in casks to merchants in France, who were then responsible for aging, bottling and labeling the wine. With batches of wine in 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild broke with tradition, he directly aged, bottled and labeled the wine before selling it to merchants. The labels of these bottles were designed by artist Jean Carlu. It was this that made the value of the bottles of this period so special and sold at a high price.
