Ben Thanh Market evolved from the popular market opened in the early 17th century, consisting of street stalls gathered together near the Saigon River. The market was officially established by French colonial forces after taking over Gia Dinh citadel in 1859. Then in 1870, the market was destroyed by a fire, and was repaired, becoming the largest market. in Saigon. In 1912, the market was moved to a new building and called Ben Thanh New Market to distinguish it from the old market. The building was then rebuilt and renovated in 1985.

The North Gate, on Le Thanh Ton Street, is colorful with stalls selling fresh fruit. East Gate, on Phan Boi Chau Street, specializes in cosmetic and confectionery products.
