Ben Thanh Market evolved from the popular market opened in the early 17th century, consisting of street stalls gathered together near the Saigon River. The market was officially established by French colonial forces after taking over Gia Dinh citadel in 1859. Then in 1870, the market was destroyed by a fire, and was repaired, becoming the largest market. in Saigon. In 1912, the market was moved to a new building and called Ben Thanh New Market to distinguish it from the old market. The building was then rebuilt and renovated in 1985.

With an area of more than 13000m², Ben Thanh market welcomes an average of 10,000 domestic and international visitors every day. The market includes 1437 stalls, 6000 small merchants and 11 businesses. Inside the market is a variety of shops from affordable to luxury, souvenir shops, t-shirts and clothes, as well as traditional crafts including embroidery, silk inside and out, countryside, and many different garments with Vietnamese, Asian, and Western styles. In addition, visitors can also taste and buy fruits, dry food and vegetables, and a variety of food ingredients at the stalls near the food court.

As one of the largest markets in Vietnam as well as in the region, Ben Thanh market consists of 4 main gates and 12 side doors. South Gate, overlooking Quach Thi Trang Square, with the symbol of a 3-sided clock tower, inside selling dry food and clothes. The North Gate, on Le Thanh Ton Street, is colorful with stalls selling fresh fruit. East Gate, on Phan Boi Chau Street, specializes in cosmetic and confectionery products. West Gate, on Phan Chu Trinh Street, with a variety of crafts and souvenirs. In addition to the morning market, from 5 p.m. daily, food stalls and souvenir stalls begin to be prepared for the night market at the space outside Ben Thanh market. Guests can comfortably enjoy traditional dishes and shop at any hour of the day.
