The Yoga Institute is one of the oldest organized yoga centers in the world, and is also a government-run non-profit organization.

Founded by Shri Yogendraji in 1918 in Santacruz. Yogendraji wanted to bring the ancient practice of Yoga to households to help people cope with illness and live in balance, and that is said to be the purpose for which he founded the Academy.

He is often considered the father of the modern Yoga renaissance. The Academy holds a prominent position in training thousands of people every day by informing them about the health benefits of yoga. It also offers training courses on teaching Yoga.

The Yoga Academy has received the Prime Minister's prestigious Award for outstanding contributions to the promotion and development of Yoga for the year 2018 - 2019. This award was personally awarded by the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra (Academy of Yoga Institute) in the category of “National Academy” at a special ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan on August 30, 2019.

Although most people want to learn yoga just to solve their physical problems, Shri Yogendra wants the Yoga Institute to be more than just a place that can help them cope with illness. He wants it to be a “School of Life” where people learn to live. The Yoga Institute, with its simple, sincere and non-commercial stance, reaches out to practitioners and strives to help them lead happy, healthy and balanced lives in a challenging world.

There is also the Shri Yogendra Classical Yoga Museum which was inaugurated in 1987 at the Yoga Institute, by then President of India, Shri Giani Zail Singh. In addition, there are many books published from the Academy that help with its goals, related to yoga therapy, couples counseling, yoga asanas, pranayam breath control, etc.
