The Vo Doi Forest Village Site is located in Vo Doi Hamlet, Tran Hoi Commune, Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province. It is an important historical relic, officially recognized as a National Historical Site by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on June 20, 2018. The site is currently part of the U Minh Ha National Park and lies within the Ca Mau Biosphere Reserve.

The Vo Doi Forest Village was established during the challenging years of the resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism. It became a vital revolutionary base where local people and revolutionary cadres built a new village in the forest, serving as a stronghold for the anti-colonial struggle in Ca Mau during the most difficult times of the war.

History of the Vo Doi Forest Village

After the Geneva Accords were signed in 1954, the US and the puppet government under Ngo Dinh Diem increased their oppressive actions and built a colonial regime in South Vietnam. In response to the control of the Saigon government, the people of Ca Mau, answering the call of the Communist Party, established forest villages as a strategy to protect revolutionary forces and civilians from suppression, while also developing resistance bases.

Vo Doi Forest Village was one of the exemplary forest villages, formed through the creativity and determination of the local people. The village consisted of stilt houses made from cajeput wood, scattered across high mounds in the forest, forming self-sufficient clusters of settlement. Notably, in building these homes, the villagers selected large cajeput trees, stripped their bark to use as thatched roofs, allowing the houses to last for 2-3 years without harming the trees.

Life and Activities in the Forest Village

Vo Doi Forest Village was a self-governing community where people lived in solidarity, with the spirit of “standing together and fighting together.” Life in the village depended on the forest for fishing, shrimping, small-scale animal husbandry, and farming to provide food for the entire community. Daily activities in the village were lively and full of optimism, and the village also became a place for training revolutionary cadres and raising the revolutionary consciousness of the masses.

The houses in the village ranged from 20 to 50 square meters in size, with roofs made of cajeput bark or nipa palm leaves, and small wooden bridges crossing canals that connected the houses. Drinking water was sourced from natural wells carved from cajeput tree roots or from deep wells that provided clean water for daily use.

Role of the Forest Village in the Resistance

Vo Doi Forest Village was not only a safe hideout for revolutionary cadres and civilians, but also an essential base for organizing resistance campaigns in southern Vietnam. When the "Dong Khoi" (General Uprising) movement erupted in 1960, the revolutionary forces in Vo Doi Forest Village, in coordination with external forces, launched attacks on the enemy and achieved many victories, liberating large rural areas in Ca Mau Province.

After the "Dong Khoi" movement, the armed forces were strengthened, and people returned to their original villages to continue contributing to the long-term struggle for national independence. However, the Vo Doi Forest Village remains a key part of the memory and tradition of the military and people of Ca Mau.

Vo Doi Forest Village is not only a historical relic but also a symbol of the resilient spirit, creativity in warfare, and the unity between the military and the people during the people's war of resistance. It serves as a place for future generations to understand the sacrifices and hardships endured by the military and civilians during the years of resistance.

Significance of the Relic

With its recognition as a National Historical Relic in 2018, the Vo Doi Forest Village Site stands as proof of the resilience of the military and people of Ca Mau in their struggle for national independence. It is also a valuable heritage site for educating younger generations about revolutionary traditions. This site preserves precious historical memories of a heroic period in the nation's history and is an attractive destination for tourists who want to explore the great history of Vietnam.

As a symbol of the courage and unity of the people in the fight against foreign invaders, the Vo Doi Forest Village remains an important landmark in the collective memory of the Vietnamese people, serving both as a memorial and a source of inspiration for those who visit and learn about its historical significance.
