The Kaohsiung History Museum is an important part of the city, bearing in it a historical as well as a local cultural value. Located on the Love River - Love River, Kaohsiung History Museum was once the administrative office of the Kaohsiung city government. However, this place was built by the Japanese, so the overall exterior of this place has a bold Japanese architectural style. As for the interior, the museum harmoniously combines the architecture of the East and the modern features of the West, with natural light from the skylight from the windows surrounding the main tower. Along with the Y-shaped staircase and the beautifully curving corridors on either side, connecting to the gallery corridor all exude majesty.

At the time of the Sino-Japanese war broke out, the outside of this place was painted in a camouflage light blue to avoid enemy bombing. The upper turret serves as the highest point of the entire building. Along with two symmetrical auxiliary turrets on either side, the museum was once the most magnificent building in the city. Moreover, the windows come in various shapes, such as octagonal windows, peach windows and semicircular windows, while the walls are carved with diverse patterns. The exposed ceramic sewer lines are also a rare unique Japanese architectural style.

Formerly the Kaohsiung History Museum was the office of Kaohsiung City in 1924, however, in 1939 due to the policy of expansion to the east of the city center, the City Office was moved to the location. The present is Diem Thanh district. After World War II, in 1945, the City Office was taken over by the Kuomintang Government and renamed Kaohsiung City Hall. In 1947, Kaohsiung City Hall was one of the historic places during the outbreak of Incident 228 and since then it has remained Kaohsiung City Hall and the administrative center of the city for to January 1992.

On January 18, 1992, Kaohsiung City Hall moved its office to the Executive Government Building in Lingya District.

Through many historical ups and downs, the old town hall has fulfilled its administrative duties. Because of its important historical location, which is evidence of many historical contexts, it has been transformed into the Kaohsiung History Museum, which aims to preserve the city's valuable cultural heritage. . The Kaohsiung History Museum officially opened on October 25, 1998. It is the first national museum run by the local government in Taiwan.
