Saint Giong is one of the greatest heroes, a mighty warrior who successfully defeated the Northern invaders in the past. According to legend, as a child, he could not speak or laugh. But when he heard that the An enemy came to attack his country, he ate a lot and grew up quickly. After a few months, he became a giant and brave. Before leaving, he asked the king for a long sword and an iron horse. He made every effort to defeat the enemy in battle, protect the territory and the people. After that, he climbed Soc Son mountain and flew to the sky. To commemorate and pay tribute to Saint Giong, local people then built a temple to hold the annual festival.

Currently, there are 2 annual festivals of Saint Giong. One is at Phu Dong temple and the other is at Soc Son temple. At Phu Dong temple, the time starts on the 8th and 9th of the fourth lunar month, and in Soc Son, the time starts from the 6th to the 8th of the first lunar month.

1. Phu Dong Giong Festival

Phu Dong is the birthplace of Saint Giong. Therefore, the festival here is held slightly larger than the festival in Soc Son. All people in the village will bring offerings to Phu Dong Temple to do the ceremony to show gratitude and respect to Saint Giong.

In addition, the villagers will participate in the folk theater to perform the play Saint Giong fighting the An invaders. There will be 28 boys and girls imitating the battle. The sound of gongs and drums will describe every change of movement in battle. Besides ritual activities, people also organize a lot of folk games for people and visitors to participate.

2. Soc Son Giong Festival

This festival takes place in Phu Linh commune, Soc Son district, Hanoi. This is where Saint Giong ascended to heaven. Some days before the festival, there is a special ceremony with lots of offerings. After that, everyone cleans the statue of Saint Giong the next day and prepares everything well for the main day.

On the 7th day, there will be some fun activities such as traditional singing performances and fun folk games during the festival. All these activities will be held after Saint Giong's return to heaven.
