In the past, before the museum was established, the owner of this building was Mr. Hua Bon Hoa, also known as Uncle Hỏa, a wealthy and renowned Chinese merchant in Saigon during the first half of the 20th century. He owned many villas scattered across the Saigon - Gia Đinh - Cho Lon area, and his family played a significant role in the development of the city of Saigon.

In addition to his family's mansions, he also built many structures like hospitals and temples. Some of the buildings he constructed are still in use today, such as Tu Du Hospital, Phung Son Temple, Majestic Hotel, Saigon General Hospital, and the government guesthouse located on Ly Thai To Street, as well as many banks.

In 1929, Uncle Hoa commissioned the construction of this grand building designed by Mr. Rivera, a French architect, perfectly blending Eastern and Western architectural styles. The building was completed in 1934.

In 1987, the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum was established in this very building. Due to a lack of artifacts, the museum didn't officially begin operations until 1992.

Today, the museum has become a major center for fine arts in Vietnam. It is home to a vast collection of famous artworks, antiques, sculptures, and paintings that hold great historical, cultural, and artistic significance.
