What to expect

Day 1: Hanoi – Lao Cai
This evening, transfer to Hanoi Train Station for an overnight train ride to Lao Cai City, the gateway to Sapa. Overnight on the train in a soft sleeper compartment.

Day 2: Lao Cai – Sapa
Upon arrival in Lao Cai, enjoy breakfast before visiting a local market (Coc Ly on Tuesday, Can Cau on Saturday, or Bac Ha on Sunday). These markets are vibrant gatherings where hill tribes, including the Flower Hmong, Phu La, Black Dao, Tay, and Nung, come together. Explore the unique products and the lively animal market. After the market, take a short walk through a hill-tribe village to learn more about the local culture and traditions. Then, continue by road to Sapa, a former hill station nestled in the mountains. The area is known for its colorful hill tribe population, where you can observe intricate embroidery and traditional costumes. Overnight in Sapa.
Distance & Journey Time: Transfer Lao Cai to Bac Ha: 70 km (approx. 1.5 hours), Bac Ha to Sapa: 97 km (approx. 2 hours), Walking & sightseeing: 1 hour.

Day 3: Sapa – Ban Khoang – Ta Giang Phinh
After breakfast, leave Sapa for a scenic drive to Ban Khoang Valley. Enjoy stunning views of the Hoang Lien Mountain Range, also known as The Tonkinese Alps. Visit a Red Dao village and learn about their traditional embroidery and way of life. Continue to Ta Giang Phinh Valley for a local lunch. In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk through the valley, home to the Blue Hmong ethnic group, and visit local houses to see traditional handicrafts. Return to Sapa in the late afternoon. Overnight in Sapa.
Note: Appropriate footwear is required for trekking. Programs may change if conditions are wet.
Distance & Journey Time: Walking & sightseeing: 3-4 hours.

Day 4: Sapa – Hang Da – Sau Chua – Hanoi
Start your day with a half-day trekking tour to Hang Da and Sau Chua Villages, where the Black H'mong people have preserved their traditional way of life. Walk along narrow pathways through the countryside, enjoying the peaceful scenery. Return to the hotel to check out by 12:00 noon, then have free time for lunch and last-minute exploration before transferring back to Hanoi.
Distance & Journey Time: Walking & sightseeing: 3 hours, Sapa to Hanoi: 315 km (approx. 5.5-6 hours).

  • September-November and March-May have the most comfortable temperatures, averaging in the mid 20’s Celsius.
  • May - Aug: The summer months can get hot and humid, especially low in the valleys, with temperatures commonly going above 30 degrees.
  • The winter months of December to February are cold and foggy, sometimes on rare occasions even bringing light snow, so those visiting in these months are recommended to bring good and warm clothing.
  • Harvesting time is usually at the end of Sep & early October. Just before harvesting, rice fields will be yellow-green.
  • Reservations during peak times are subject to supplementary charges and compulsory meals: Public holidays, Lunar New Year; Easter season,Christmas.
