Kyo-Yuzen is a traditional Kyoto dyeing technique with a dyeing technique that originated in the mid-Edo period, to the end of the 17th century. The name of this product was coined by Miyazaki Yuzensai. The dye is applied directly to the fabric, and the designs often showcase the natural and animal beauties of the different seasons in vivid and vibrant colors. What makes the Kyo-Yuzen technique special, is a process known as itome-nori. During this process, the artist coats the edges of the pattern with starch, so that the surrounding dyes do not mix. Thus, one can create precise and thin lines, which is difficult to achieve even with stitch work, and create different beautiful designs according to the seasons. Kyo-Yuzen products are completely handmade and extremely complex, with 26 stages to completion. Throughout the years, there have been tutorials on simpler methods such as fabric printing and pattern painting so that more people can experience and create their own Kyo-Yuzen products.
