At first, the school was only for the Royal Family and the children of the nobles, then expanded and accepted the children of commoners but with excellent academic performance. The names of scholars who get their doctorate will be engraved on the stone stele and displayed inside the Temple of Literature. With more than 900 years of operation and has trained thousands of talents for the country, today the Temple of Literature has become a place to visit for both domestic and foreign tourists.
The Temple of Literature has a brick wall structure surrounding it and the inside is divided into 5 spaces with different architecture. Each space is limited by brick walls with 3 doors to connect with each other including a large main door and two side doors on both sides. Inside Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam, there are many other historical monuments including Ho Van, Van Mieu Mon, Dai Trung Mon, Khue Van Cac, Thien Quang Well, 82 Doctor's stele placed on the back of 82 wooden turtles. Stone, Dai Thanh Mon, the shrine area, Khai Thanh temple and the front and rear houses.
Temple of Literature Quoc Tu Giam has long become a symbol of education, success and luck. Therefore, before each important exam, the students come here to worship in the hope of passing and getting high marks. On each occasion of the Lunar New Year, people in the capital flock to the Temple of Literature to ask for words or wishes from the monks, wishing for luck and happiness for the new year. These works are given as gifts or used as home decorations on important occasions.
